Hydro Dramatics Enhances Missouri Botanical Garden's 'Liquid Assets' With Completion Of New Water Features

St. Louis Fountain Consulting Firm Has Supplied Nearly Every Fountain And Water Feature At The World-Renowned Garden For 30 Years

Hydro Dramatics, the St. Louis-based fountain consulting firm, recently completed several new fountains and water features in three of the Missouri Botanical Garden’s newest gardens: the Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden: A Missouri Adventure, the George Washington Carver Garden and the Ottoman Garden. Hydro Dramatics has an exceptionally long history of service to the Garden, having created, designed and maintained nearly every fountain and water feature within its 79 acres for the past 30 years.

“We value our long relationship with the Missouri Botanical Garden,” says Kerry Friedman, vice president and general manager for Hydro Dramatics. “No two fountain projects at the world-renowned garden are ever alike in design and execution. We take pride in the knowledge that we provide beautiful and unique water features for the public to enjoy.”

The Doris I. Schnuck Children’s Garden, which covers two acres, is designed to give children an interactive opportunity to explore 19th century Missouri frontier and life along the river. Among the prominent water features that Hydro Dramatics installed in the children’s garden is a popular and cooling splash area, complete with “popper” jet fountains and a mushroom pump. In addition, Hydro Dramatics installed all pumps and a control system for the water features in the pump house, which was designed to look like a paddle wheel, and supplied all of the necessary equipment, controls, filters and chemical systems for the garden’s dazzling waterfall.

In the one-and-a-half acre Carver Garden, the focal point is a life-size bronze statue of Dr. George Washington Carver, located on a walking bridge between two fountains and a reflecting pool. At the request of the Missouri Botanical Garden and in keeping with the Carver Garden’s design, Hydro Dramatics installed all fountain equipment underwater, rather than in an exterior or underground vault. “The underwater method is the most traditional way of fountain installation and design,” Friedman says.

Hydro Dramatics has also finished its work on water features for the Missouri Botanical Garden’s new walled Ottoman Garden, which is scheduled to open later this year. This unique one-quarter acre garden is devoted to enjoyment of the senses and includes various fountains and artifacts to provide a strong sense of authenticity toward Turkish history during the Ottoman Empire. Hydro Dramatics installed a traditional wall fountain, or selesibil, in which water drips down the tiers of a wall, creating a pleasing, relaxing experience. The garden’s focal point is a shallow pool with jets spouting gently along the rim.

The Missouri Botanical Garden, founded in 1859, is a National Historic Landmark and a center for botanical research, education and horticultural display.

Established in 1972, Hydro Dramatics is a division of Missouri Machinery & Engineering Co. Inc. (www.momach.com). This affiliation enhances Hydro Dramatics’ technological and fountain creative expertise and provides its design team with direct access to the fabrication/manufacturing capabilities needed to tackle the most sophisticated fountain projects.

Hydro Dramatics created the Gateway Geyser, the world’s tallest fountain, on the East St. Louis riverfront. Among recently completed projects are water features at the renovated Grand Basin and Jewel Box in Forest Park, the Cypress Swamp at the Saint Louis Zoo and the fountains at Saint Louis University.

In addition to creating fountains locally, regionally and nationally, Hydro Dramatics provides fountain equipment overseas. The firm’s recent international projects include designing and creating fountains in San Juan, Puerto Rico; within the city of Doha, Qatar; and at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
